I made this problem to see if it would be better to shoot in different position while shooting free throws so it could help out the basketball team.
Broad Question
Does angle effects your likelihood to make a basket in basketball.
Specific Question
Does the angle of your shot in basketball effect your chances of making a shot in basketball.
Hypothesis
I think standing up right will prove to increase in the number of of shots made, propped up will be the second best position, and kneeling will be the worst position.
Graph of Hypothesis
Variables
Independent Variable: Angles
Dependent Variable: Number of shots made
Variables That Need To Be Controlled: How many shot taken
Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation
Position- A place occupied or to be occupied.
General Plan
1) I will shoot from Kneeling and record my data.
2) I will shoot from standing regular and record my data.
3) I will shoot from being propped up on something and record my data.
Potential Problems And Solutions
The ball could hit someone
Safety Or Environmental Concerns
Be very careful and know your surroundings

Background Research
Introduction
Basketball is a strange sport not relying on just strength, speed, or brains but all of them. You have to be strong enough to fight for a rebound, fast enough for fast breaks, and smart enough to make good decisions.
Cool Facts
James Naismith was the creator of the wonderful game of basketball In December of 1891. He was a teacher at YMCA. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students, instead of a game that relied solely on strength. The first baskets were made out of peach baskets and did not have a hole in the bottom of a net so the refs would have to climb a ladder and retrieve the ball every basket. Backboards were introduced to the game after it became a problem when a shot would go long and into the crowd. They would handle the ball pass it around in the crowd.
Rules
The game of basketball is played with two teams with five players on each team without subs. two guards, two forwards, and a center on each team. SCORING:
2 point field goal- a shot made from anywhere during play inside the 3 pt arc.
3 point field goal- a shot made from anywhere outside the 3 pt arc.
Free throw- 1 point is awarded to an unguarded shot taken from behind the free throw line while the clock is stopped.
SKILLS:
Boxing out- a player’s position between an opposing player and the basket to obtain a better rebounding position.
Dribbling- bouncing the ball with 1 hand using your fingertips instead of your palm so that it rebounds back to yourself (the only legal way to move with the ball)
Passing- moving the ball by throwing, bouncing, handing, or rolling it to another player (Chest, Bounce, Lob)
Shooting- throwing the ball to make a basket
Pivoting- stepping once or more in any direction with the same foot while holding the other foot at its initial point.
Rebounding- The recovering of a shot that bounces off the backboard or the rim.
FOULS: results in one or more free throws awarded to the opposing team
Blocking- impeding the progress of an opponent by extending one or both arms horizontally or getting in the path of a moving player.
Charging- running into a stationary player while you are moving with the ball.
Hacking- the player hits the arm or hand of the person holding the ball.
Holding- the player holds the person with or without the ball.
VIOLATIONS: results in a change of possession with the team in bounding the ball at the sideline opposite where the infringement took place
Traveling- moving illegally with the ball
Three seconds- an offensive player remains in the key (free throw lane- the area under the basket) for more than 3 seconds
Double dribble- a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time or they stop and then start dribbling again
TERMS:
Air ball- a shot that completely misses the rim and the backboard
Assist- a pass to a teammate who then scores a field goal.
Defense- team trying to stop the other team from scoring
Dunk- to throw the ball down into the basket with the hand above the level of the rim
Fast break- dribbling or passing the ball towards your basket before the defense can set up
Man-to-man- a defensive strategy where everyone guards an assigned player
Offense- team trying to score
Turn over- any loss of the ball without a shot being taken
Zone defense- a defensive strategy where everyone guards an area instead of a player (2-1-2, 2-3)
A basketball court is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. A men’s basketball itself weights from 20-22 ounces and a girls basketball weights 18-20 ounces. A men’s basketball has a diameter of 9.39 to 9.55 inches, girls basketball has a diameter of 9.07 to 9.23 inches, and regulation basketball rim has a diameter 18 inches.
I think standing up right will prove to increase in the number of of shots made, propped up will be the second best position, and kneeling will be the worst position. The data supports my hypothesis.
I went to a basketball court with the free throw line marked and shot ten shots from each position and recorded the data then had nine others do this

Data Analysis
I found that standing up regular is the best position to shoot from with an average of 6.8 shots made, propped up is second best with an average of 6 shots made, and kneeling is the worst shot position with a total of 1.9 shots made.
Conclusion
I think standing up right will prove to increase in the number of of shots made, propped up will be the second best position, and kneeling will be the worst position. The data supports my hypothesis.
Discussion
I observed that even thought standing regular has the most shots made propped up had a higher Constance of making a swish.

Abstract
I wanted to do this project because I like basketball. I found that the best position to shoot from is Regular, second best was propped up, and then Kneeling is the worst position to shoot from.
